Voice Disorders - Speech Language Pathology

Vocal Health

We often take our voices for granted, but when we develop a hoarse voice or experience pain in our throats when we speak, simple communication tasks can become difficult. If you are experiencing voice issues and you don’t know why, or your vocal disorder is secondary to an identified medical condition, find out if we can help. We receive referrals from Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) doctors or individuals who call us directly to help them improve the health and quality of their voices. Many voice issues can be alleviated with lifestyle changes that improve the health of your vocal folds.

What to expect during your visit:

An assessment starts with the Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) discussing the cause of the voice issue. The SLP will review any reports from an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Doctor. The SLP will then ask a series of questions to identify if the individual has healthy vocal habits in their daily life or if some of their habits can be harmful to their vocal health.

Next, the SLP will record the client’s voice and measure it with technical tools for an objective analysis. The results of the measurements will be compared to the typical norms of others their age. This analysis will be shared in a report with goals identified to help the individual start improving their vocal health.

With adults, the goals are self-directed. For children or youth, the client’s family may be involved to help achieve the goals.
