Speaking in front of others—whether it’s a meeting with clients, colleagues, or supervisors—can feel challenging or even overwhelming. You may think it’s not one of your strengths, but the good news is that public speaking is a skill that can be developed. As Speech-Language Pathologists, we specialize in communication and can provide the guidance and strategies you need to build confidence and improve your speaking skills.
What to expect during your visit:
An assessment starts with casual conversation, questions about the individual’s feelings around public speaking/ what situations they find challenging, and a mock interview/presentation/social situation.
Following this, the Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) will write a report that analyzes the client’s public speaking skills, including (but not limited to) :
- Eye contact
- Body language
- Volume
- Rate of speech
- Articulation
- Organization of thoughts
- Vocabulary choice
- Breath
- Psychological self-talk
After the assessment, the SLP can recommend how many sessions the individual would benefit from. The typical frequency of sessions is once a week for 6-10 sessions or as needed. In therapy, the areas of difficulty that were identified in the report will be worked on through discussion, strategies and practice, and self-reflection. The goal is to increase confidence through strong public speaking skills.
